I am getting so excited for our upcoming session!
To help us make the most of our time together and ensure we capture that soft, romantic aesthetic you see in my portfolio, I’ve put together some tips to help you prepare.
Choosing the Perfect Backdrop
Location is a beautiful way to tell your story. Whether it’s exploring the mountains, a favorite park, or a cozy, natural-light studio, I lean toward simple, clean spaces that allow your connection to be the focus. If you have a spot that holds special meaning, I’d love to hear about it; otherwise, I have plenty of curated ideas we can discuss!
Chasing the Light
As a natural-light photographer, I schedule our sessions during the late afternoon golden hour for that glowing, timeless feel. Because the sun dictates our timeframe, please aim to arrive a few minutes early so we don’t miss a second of that beautiful light! If the weather looks less than ideal, I’ll be in touch to reschedule so we can ensure your photos have the bright, airy look we’re aiming for.
Wardrobe & Styling
To achieve a cohesive, high-end look, I recommend choosing a palette of 3–4 coordinating colors, with no logos or distracting patterns.
The Palette
Soft, neutral, and earth tones (ivory, light grey, sage, blush, or khaki) work beautifully with my editing style.
A Note on Color
I suggest avoiding bright neon colors, as they can reflect onto skin tones. If you’re like me, you probably love wearing black 99% of the time! While my photography style is light, you can absolutely still incorporate black into your look. To keep the overall feel soft and timeless, I suggest avoiding a solid 'all-black' outfit. I recommend pairing black pieces with softer layers (like a grey knit or a tan coat) to add texture and dimension. This prevents the clothing from feeling too heavy and ensures your faces stay the focal point of every image.
The Details
Professional hair and makeup can truly make your features shine on camera. I also suggest clean, neutral colored nails to keep the focus on your expressions and connection.
For the Ladies
Think flowy, romantic, and chic. Flowy fabrics add movement to your photos, while heels offer an elegant silhouette. Feel free to bring layers like a knit shawl or a scarf, and definitely pack a pair of comfy flats for walking between setups!
For the Gentlemen
Aim for classic, tailored pieces in natural fabrics. You don’t need to match your partner, but staying in the same tonal family looks very polished. I remember buying my husband (who is a mechanic and skateboarder) his first pair of dress shoes for our own engagement session—that one small detail made our photos feel so much more timeless!
Most Importantly - Just Be You
Please don’t stress about posing or knowing what to do. My job is to direct you and create a relaxed environment where your personalities can shine. You just need to show up, have fun, and let me handle the rest!
